I thought I would write a bit about what is happening in the world at the moment, to put things into context. I know I will enjoy looking back at this blog one day so I want to put in some historic facts so that I can remember better.
We are in the middle of a financial crisis – time will tell just how bad it is but most of the major banks are slipping into majority ownership by the government. There is a huge backlash against “fat-cat” bankers – senior executives who have abused their positions to vote each other high bonuses, pension pots and other perks.
Barack Obama is in his first couple of months of his presidency and, whilst everyone has great hope for his success, he has a lot to fix both economically and in international affairs.
Tensions in the Gaza strip have eased slightly following the all-out invasion of the area by Israeli ground troops.
Pakistani terrorists attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team’s tour bus with automatic guns and rockets, killing some police guards and the hope of the country hosting and international sports events in the foreseeable future.
